I REFER to the article "Fine for using phone while crossing the road?" (The Sunday Times Feb 18 2007, Page 10.)

It was mentioned in the article that, three pedestrians in New York were killed while listening to their iPod on the road. To give another example closer to home, an operations manager almost hit a man who was "too busy listening to his MP3 player and reading his book to notice her car."

Thus this article is talking about the fact that people, who are too engrossed with their electronic gadgets are extremely vulnerable on the road. Thus people are debating wether or not to impose a fine for being obsessed with ones electronic gadgets while crossing the road.

Personally I believe a fine is not neccesary, and i agree that one would have enough common sense to look out for the traffic while crossing the road. Most of the people here would understand road safety thanks to the many road safety initiatives by the Singapore Traffic Police, it is only a small handful of people, who are threatening their own lives.

I do not see a problem with using your electronic gadgets while crossing the road, as I always look out for oncoming vehicles and i strongly believe most of my fellow Singaporeans do too. But for the handfull who do not understand the meaning of road safety, I believe it is only and issue of awareness. I suggest that more roadshows could be held to educate those who do not excercise road safety while on their electronic gadgets, as long as there is an awareness within the population, accidents caused by ones ignorance due to his electronic gadget would be rare.

Thus a fine would not be an optimal solution, I would find it extremely unpleasent to be in an important conversation on my phone and to be stopped by a man in white and blue, demanding a fine for crossing the road with my mobile phone even when i am looking out for oncoming vehicles.

As stated in the article, "we have fines for jaywalking, but people still jaywalk.", thus imposing a fine would still be futile. Thus I believe there is only a need to raise awareness of using electronic gadgets crossing the road, and a fine would be unnecessary.
